This program aims to support, under exceptional circumstances, the maintenance of an essential selection of venues for musical and variety shows in Quebec. It is being implemented as part of the stimulus measures and the resumption of activities encouraged by the Quebec government.


  • To be eligible for financial support, applicant companies must:
  • Be a legally incorporated business, for-profit or not-for-profit, and be a place whose activities are mainly focused on the presentation of professional music or variety shows

  • Have their head office and principal place of business in Quebec, and demonstrate that the majority control of the company is held by persons with their a tax residence in Quebec

  • Have been in operation for at least three years and have relevant professional experience

  • Have carried out, on an ongoing basis, activities related to the presentation of performances during the last three years

  • Generate a significant volume of business as well as box office or other revenues through the presentation of music and variety shows

  • For the purpose of assessing applications, SODEC distinguishes between two categories of venues dedicated to the presentation of professional music or variety shows:
  • Category 1 venues: cultural venues with a single purpose, open to the public only when shows are programmed there

  • Category 2 venues: multi-purpose cultural venues that remain open to the public outside of performance programming periods

  • Regardless of its category, venues must:
  • Have a suitable infrastructure and appropriate facilities for the presentation of professional shows

  • Offer artists and producers a range of services that meet the requirements of music and variety shows

  • Comply with all applicable agreements, permits, laws and regulations under the activities of the venue

  • For the purposes of this program, "professional shows" refer to music and variety shows presented by professional artists in return remuneration
  • The following are therefore excluded: shows offered free of charge, amateur shows, shows organized in the framework of popular festivals or parties, cover band performances, benefit or charity shows, corporate or private shows, karaoke, broadcasting of recorded music, showcases for performances, launches and promotional tours

  • Ineligible applicants include:
  • Venues that have received operating funding from the Government of Quebec or CALQ for their presentation activities in the last 12 months

  • Broadcast venues with a total capacity of more than 2,500 seats

  • Sole proprietorships

  • Funding is condition upon a plan for the resumption of presentation activities over a period from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021

  • The amount of funding is based on:
  • The total of eligible fixed costs and eligible costs related to the resumption of activities

  • Total income, including special assistance related to quarantine measures

  • The program's available funding

  • The recommendations and opinions of SODEC professionals

Eligible Expenses

  • Fixed costs directly related to the operation and maintenance of essential services for hosting performances in venues
  • Ineligible expenses for fixed cost calculation: fixed costs and other costs related to activities other than the presentation of shows

  • The cost of the resumption of activities related to dissemination activities in compliance with the health measures recommended by the government.
